Mother's Love, a novel by Fernando Perez Rodriguez

What inspired you to write this novel?

For me, writing is a powerful way to express emotions that are difficult to articulate. Literature has always been my escape, my sanctuary, and at the same time, a necessity—like a breath of fresh air I can’t live without. As a healthcare worker, I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of cancer, both in my professional life and within my own family. These personal experiences deeply moved me and ultimately inspired me to come up with my latest novel, Mother’s Love.

How long did it take to complete this book?

Writing this story was an emotional journey. Since the subject matter is so close to my heart, it took me nearly a year to complete. Balancing my career and the emotional weight of the story made it a challenging but deeply fulfilling process.

Mother’s Love is a novel about the deep, unwavering bond between a mother and her child. How has your relationship with your mother influenced this book?

My mother means everything to me. Who I am today, and everything I have achieved, is because of her. No matter how much time passes, no words will ever be enough to express my gratitude for all that she has given me.

What was the most challenging part of writing this book?

The hardest part was reliving painful experiences. As someone who has worked closely with cancer patients and has also seen loved ones battle this disease, many parts of the book reflect real emotions and struggles. Writing about these moments felt deeply personal and, at times, overwhelming.

How did you decide on the names of the main characters, Ema and Andrés?

This is a fictional story, though it is rooted in my experiences as a healthcare professional and as someone who has witnessed the impact of cancer in my family. The names of the characters are completely random—any resemblance to real people is purely coincidental.

The novel includes well-researched information on cancer and its treatment. Where did you gather these details?

As a healthcare worker, I’ve had direct exposure to medical knowledge about cancer, its treatments, and the emotional toll it takes on patients and their families. That knowledge, combined with extensive research, helped me present accurate and helpful information within the novel.

Do you have plans to write a sequel? Perhaps a continuation of Ema’s journey?

No, not at the moment.

Your book highlights the challenges faced by single mothers. What are your thoughts on this issue?

Life presents challenges for everyone, but single mothers often face additional struggles, both personally and professionally. Despite the hardships, life is still beautiful and worth embracing.

How do you handle negative reviews?

Not every book can appeal to everyone. I believe that both positive and negative reviews are valuable—they offer insights and a chance to grow as a writer. Constructive criticism is always welcome.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

The literary world is tough, but if writing is your passion, don’t give up at the first obstacle. Stay determined, work hard, and believe in your dreams. If you put in the effort and stay persistent, those dreams might just come true!

Time for some rapid-fire questions. Shall we begin?

Yeah, let’s do it!

There’s no way I could pick just one! The world is full of incredible places, cultures, and people—I’d love to experience as much of it as possible.
