SYNOPSIS (MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS)

Narcissus and Goldmund is an allegorical tale based in medieval times that examines human duality from a philosophical perspective. The story’s protagonists, Goldmund and Narcissus, symbolize Nietzsche’s idea of the Apollonian and Dionysian dichotomy. This duality pits the quest for knowledge against the baser, more primordial, Earthly impulses.

Goldmund is a charismatic young guy who comes to a monastery to become a monk to atone for his mother’s alleged transgression. Meanwhile, Narcissus is a youthful educator; a captivating figure who is just a year older than Goldmund. Narcissus’ focus is solely on the quest for knowledge through reason and intellect rather than on feelings or personal connections. Young Goldmund is totally charmed and captivated by Narcissus and wishes to follow in his footsteps. However, Narcissus, who is at a different level of understanding, makes him realize that monkhood is not his path to self-discovery. He must realize his true nature.

Narcissus continues to retreat into solitude contemplation. On the other hand, Goldmund has a life-altering encounter with a gypsy girl and ventures into the wilderness to live life to the fullest.

Goldmund’s journey is full of exploration of the human psyche and the interweaving themes of self-discovery and personal liberation. He realizes too soon that he is irresistibly attractive to women, and he goes on from woman to woman, village to village, gathering moments of life experience. Goldmund walks on the road to sin and indiscretion because he lives on the spur of the moment, being open to everything and everyone.

He confesses his sins at a Church. Yet again, there itself, he is falls in love with a beautiful statue. He finds a purpose and, under a famous Master, learns sculpting. He finds a way to express himself creatively through sculpture, drawing on his life experiences. However, he returns to his nomadic existence due to his inner need and restlessness. This time, he encounters everything that is antithetical to life: death, illness, and ugliness. Even that, he fully embraces. He ends up in prison and faces death penalty charges. However, now the abbot, Narcissus rescues and returns him to the monastery. In order to give his life meaning and purpose, he is encouraged to channel all of his experiences into art, which becomes his means of personal perfection. Still, despite Narcissus’ best efforts, Goldmund escapes from the monastery; he returns a few years later a broken man. Both men express their true spiritual and intellectual love to each other. However, Goldmund finds solace in death as part of his final quest for a universal mother.

Unfortunately, this is one of the those books that most readers will find a bit too heavy for their liking.

QUOTES

My goal is this: always to put myself in the place in which I am best able to serve, wherever my gifts and qualities find the best soil to grow, the widest field of action. There is no other goal. O how incomprehensible everything was, and actually sad, although it was also beautiful.

So you find yourself surrounded by death and horror in the world, and you escape it into lust. But lust has no duration; it leaves you again in the desert.

CONCLUSION

Narcissus and Goldmund is a timeless classic; a must-read in one’s lifetime. This is not just a novel, but rather an experience that enriches the soul and challenges the mind. Every person curious about how our decisions and experiences shape our lives should absolutely give this one a try.
