Water for Elephants is a mesmerizing tale of love and adventure. The plot revolves around a Depression-era circus. Set in the 1930s, the story follows Jacob Jankowski, a young veterinary student at Cornell University. Jankowski’s life takes an unexpected turn when his parents tragically perish in a car accident. Overcome by grief and financial ruin, Jacob impulsively jumps aboard a passing train, unknowingly joining the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Thrown into the colorful and chaotic world of the circus, Jacob becomes enthralled by its vibrant cast. This includes the enigmatic ringmaster, August Rosenbluth, and his captivating wife, Marlena, who is the star equestrian performer. As Jacob settles into his new role as the circus veterinarian, he forms a deep bond with the animals. He particularly connects with Rosie, the seemingly untrainable elephant.

However, beneath the glittering facade of the circus lies a darker reality of cruelty, manipulation, and exploitation. Jacob soon discovers August’s volatile temper and abusive treatment toward both the animals and his wife. Despite the obvious danger, Jacob finds himself drawn to Marlena. Their forbidden love begins to blossom amidst the chaos of the circus.

As tensions rise and secrets unravel, Jacob has to make some difficult choices that will determine not only his own fate, but also that of the people he loves. With the circus on the brink of collapse and danger lurking at every turn, Jacob must summon all his courage and resourcefulness to protect Marlena, Rosie, and himself from August’s tyranny.

As Jacob navigates the complexities of love in a world filled with wonder and danger, he learns valuable lessons about compassion, sacrifice, and the true meaning of family.

WHAT WE LIKED ABOUT WATER FOR ELEPHANTS

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen is a captivating novel that transports readers to the vibrant, tumultuous world of a Depression-era circus. With its wonderful characterization, evocative setting, and a gripping plot, the book keeps its readers hooked to the very end.

Water for Elephants Sara Gruen excerpt

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its immersive portrayal of circus life during the 1930s. Gruen’s meticulous research and vivid descriptions bring the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth to life. From the colorful performers and dazzling acts to the grim behind-the-scenes realities, the circus takes readers on a roller-coaster ride. Readers experience a world filled with wonder and danger, where every day is a struggle for survival amidst the harsh economic realities of the Great Depression. The author’s ability to capture the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of the circus adds depth and authenticity to the story. This, in  turn, draws readers into its enchanting, sometimes sinister allure.

Central to the novel’s success are its well sketched-out characters. Each of them has their own hopes, fears, and flaws. The protagonist, Jacob Jankowski, is a compelling and sympathetic narrator. His journey from a grief-stricken orphan to a resilient survivor strikes a chord with readers. His complex relationship with the enigmatic August Rosenbluth and his wife, Marlena, serves as the emotional core of the story. Marlena emerges as a strong and resilient character in her own right. She defies societal expectations and is extremely graceful when adversity beckons. Likewise, one cannot help falling in love with Rosie the Elephant and her antics.

In fact, the bond between Jacob, Marlena, and Rosie is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. In a way, it underscores the novel’s exploration of the human-animal connect and the power of compassion.

Sara Gruen’s masterful storytelling transports readers to a bygone era. She blends the magic of the circus with the harsh realities of life during the Great Depression.

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER ABOUT WATER FOR ELEPHANTS

Despite its mesmerizing story line and persuasive characters, some readers may find the graphic portrayal of animal cruelty and intimate violence rather disturbing. While Gruen has done a commendable job depicting the darker aspects of the circus culture, themes like animal cruelty and performers’ exploitation seem to have been normalized for that era.

At times, the romance between Jacob and Marlena seems to lack depth. Their relationship blossoms too quickly for the readers’ liking. At its heart are external circumstances rather than a genuine emotional connection. As a result, their love story feels contrived and undercooked, lacking the complexity needed to make it believable.

Lastly, some readers may find the novel’s pacing to be a bit off. While the story is full of dramatic events and plot twists, the pacing has an uneven feel about it. Certain scenes seem to last forever, while others feel rushed. This lopsided tempo makes it difficult for readers to fully engage with the story.

QUOTES

She reached for something. A giraffe passed between us — its long neck bobbing gracefully even in panic — and when it was gone I saw that she’d picked up an iron stake. She held it loosely, resting its end on the hard dirt. She looked at me again, bemused. Then her gaze shifted to the back of his bare head.

Dear Lord, I miss that woman. And not just because if she were still alive, I wouldn’t be here, although that’s God’s truth. No matter how decrepit we became, we would have looked after each other, like we always did. But after she was gone, I didn’t stand a chance against the kids. The first time I took a fall, they had it sewn up as quick as you can say cracker jack.

CONCLUSION

Ameya would unreservedly recommend its readers to give Water for Elephants a try. Gruen’s skillful storytelling and excellent characterization come together to create an unforgettable tale of love, loss, and redemption. Whether one looks at it as a poignant love story, a gripping historical drama, or a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked power, Water for Elephants continues to fascinate readers with its timeless themes and universal appeal. The book may also encourage readers to be more compassionate toward animals.

That said, arguably the best thing about the book is its thought-provoking nature – it keeps the readers thinking long after they have turned the final page. And this is what sets a great book apart from a good one.
